Mattel celebrated the 40th anniversary of Hot Wheels cars with a special design called the Custom Otto – the car illustrated on the original 1968 package, but was never produced, plus the Since ’68 line, which were the 40 most popular cars voted on by the collectors. Also, three 10-car segments, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, and Originals were issued for the anniversary.

The basic line included 40 New Models for 2008, 12 Treasure Hunts and 12 Trea$ure Hunt$, 12 Track Star cars, 24 Web Trading Cars, 24 Mystery series, and 12 Teams of 4 cars. They also expanded on the holiday assortments, this time including Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, and Fourth of July. The Classics line returned for the fourth year, adding Modern Classics with and without a metal collector’s button. For the adult collector, the 100% collectible line returned with single cars and 2-car sets. Mattel produced cars, playsets, and adult die-cast collector’s models under the Hot Wheels brand for the 2008 Speed Racer live action film.
