Kyle Petty and PE2 signed licensing agreements with Mattel. As a result, Hot Wheels returned to the racing scene with the introduction of the Pro Racing series, featuring cars from the NASCAR circuit. The line was divided into two segments: basic cars for kids and more elaborate models targeted at collectors. The basic cars had plastic bases and wheels, came packaged on a card shaped like the number “1” and sold for about $1.99. The collector’s line was more detailed, with metal bases and synthetic rubber wheels. Each included a collector’s card and retailed for approximately $2.99. Apart from the Treasure Hunt cars, the hot releases this year were the Scorchin’ Scooter, 1970 Plymouth Barracuda, Excavator and the ’59 Chevy Impala.
